Intellectually, we know this. We read it on inspirational quote cards. We hear it from our elders. We say it to our own children. But when you’re in the thick of life’s transitions, especially the big ones, the heart takes a little longer to catch up.
This past year has been one of the most emotional seasons I’ve ever navigated. My daughter Addison, my firstborn, my baby girl… graduated from high school. And now we’re less than two months away from packing the car, unloading her belongings into a dorm room, and driving away from a chapter I’ve held so close for 18 years.
And honestly? I wasn’t ready.
💫 The Rollercoaster No One Prepares You For
All the advice people gave me over the years came rushing back with startling accuracy:
- “Senior year flies by.”
- “Don’t blink.”
- “Try to enjoy the ride, even the emotional parts.”
They were right.
It did fly by.
There were moments of pure joy, like watching her step into her confidence at prom or receive college acceptance letters with tears of excitement.
And then some moments cracked me wide open, the final time I dropped her off at school, watching her drive away solo, or quietly folding laundry, thinking, “How much longer will I be doing this for her?”
Some days, I’ve felt overwhelming pride watching her become this strong, vibrant, kind young woman.
Other days, I’ve spiralled into questions like:
- Did I teach her enough?
- Is she truly ready for this next step?
- Am I?
The tears have come in waves. Happy tears. Grief tears. Proud tears. “Where did the time go?” tears.
I joke that I could probably fill a small pond with the amount I’ve cried this past year – but I also mean it. And I know many of you reading this have been here… or will be.
🌿 What Got Me Through It All
While I wear the badge of “positivity coach,” I’m still a mother, a human being, and a woman in transition, too. And it was my own tools – the ones I teach and return to again and again – that helped carry me through this chapter without completely losing my center.
Here’s what supported me most during Addison’s senior season:
🌬️ Breathwork
When the emotions hit hard (and they did), I returned to my breath.
Short, simple breathwork practices helped me move through the heaviness.
Even one minute of conscious breathing would shift me from “I’m falling apart” to “I can sit with this and be okay.”
🌳 Grounding in Nature
There were days when all I could do was put my feet on the earth, feel the sun on my face, and let the wind remind me that change is part of the cycle.
Nature doesn’t cling – and that became a powerful teacher for me this year.
🎶 Energy-Shifting Music
I had a playlist on repeat – full of songs that helped me cry when I needed to, and others that lifted my spirit when I couldn’t find my own spark. Sound is medicine, and I leaned on it heavily.
🧘♀️ Yoga & Movement
Some mornings, I rolled out my mat and moved through gentle flows with tears streaming down my face. Other days, it was a powerful kriya to shake the emotion up and out.
Both were valid. Both were healing.
🧘♀️ Meditation (Even the 3-Minute Kind)
My daily meditation practice was my anchor. I didn’t always sit for long, but I sat.
And in the silence, I heard the part of me that knows:
This season isn’t an end, it’s a shift.
And I am still her mother, just in a new way.
❤️ A New Chapter, A New Role
Being Addison’s mom has been the most meaningful adventure of my life.
And it’s not ending. It’s simply changing shape.
I feel myself moving into more of a friendship role. A quiet support rather than a daily presence.
She’s stretching her wings, and I get to witness it, not steer it. And that’s a beautiful, humbling thing.
Transitions are never easy. But they’re necessary.
And when we meet them with grace, tools, and a whole lot of compassion, we can move through them with our hearts intact – even when they’re tender.
✨ If You’re in a Season of Change…
Whether you’re sending a child off to college, closing a chapter in your life, or simply navigating the emotional waves that come with growth… I see you.
You’re not alone. And you don’t have to hold it all by yourself.
This past year reminded me that energy shifts, and we get to move with it.
If you need support, breath, grounding, or a little emotional reset, I’d be honored to help you come back to yourself.
Because no matter what’s changing around you, you deserve to feel anchored, supported, and whole.
In love & light
