Hey everyone,

I recently wrote an article for Authority Magazine about the power of food as medicine. It was a personal reflection of how this knowledge changed my life.

I thought I’d share the highlights with you all:

It all started a few years ago, when I was 40 years old. I suffered a concussion that rocked my world. I had lingering symptoms that I desperately wanted to go away. One of the numerous suggestions from the doctors I saw was to try an anti-inflammatory diet. That one change in my diet started the road to recovery. Very quickly I started feeling better, sleeping better, had way more energy and I was losing weight for the first time in a long time.

The right foods absolutely can have a profound effect on the body. In addition to my concussion, I was diagnosed at 27 with Osteopenia. A condition that precedes Osteoporosis. I started back then trying to do everything possible from a natural standpoint to slow the progression of my thinning bones. I am proud to report diet and exercise kept the progression at bay for 16 years. I am now 3 years into being Osteoporic and I’m still relying on diet and exercise. The day may come when my doctor and I feel medication is necessary but for now, we are pleased with the results we see with whole foods and supplements.

Here are some of the curative properties and benefits of a healthy diet:

Stopping Diseases

Studies show consuming foods high in Vitamin A & D and taking them in supplement form do wonders for any autoimmune disease:

  • 5 foods high in Vitamin A are Broccoli, Red Bell Peppers, Milk, Cantaloupe and Apricots.
  • 5 foods high in Vitamin D are Eggs, Shrimp, Mushrooms, Pork Tenderloin, and Oatmeal.

Reducing toxins from the body

Studies show foods high in antioxidants help our body rid of diseases like Insulin Resistance (IR), PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) Non-Alcohol Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and some cancers caused by toxins.

  • 5 foods high in antioxidants are Blackberries, Blueberries, Avocado, Onion, and Carrots.

Reducing inflammation

Studies show following an anti-inflammatory diet and removing the 5 BIG GUNS (Sugar, Gluten, Dairy, Soy & Corn) are extremely beneficial.

Balancing blood sugar

Studies show following a low glycemic index diet helps balance blood sugar which affects conditions like Type 2 Diabetes as well as improving mental health. Lean protein and colorful veggies are excellent low-glycemic food choices.

Clean eating is important

Studies are finding there are benefits to consuming organic foods. Globally we are ingesting on average 5 grams of plastic a week. That is the size of a credit card. Some of that plastic consumption comes in the way we eat food. I realize it is not always possible to eat organic all the time, but even just focusing on the dirty dozen and trying to replace those foods with organic ones would be beneficial to overall health. The Dirty Dozen are the following 12 foods:

  • Strawberries
  • Spinach
  • Nectarines
  • Apples
  • Grapes
  • Peaches
  • Cherries
  • Pears
  • Tomatoes
  • Celery
  • Potatoes
  • Sweet Bell Peppers

Our bodies are designed to heal when nourished with real food that provides vital nutrients to our bodies. The current social norm is to run to the doctor and get a prescription when things aren’t right. I’m excited to be playing even a small role in helping shift this social norm to a more lifestyle and nutrition-focused world through my job as a certified Health Coach.
