Walk into almost any grocery store, pharmacy, or health food store and you’ll find shelves filled with supplements.
Then open Instagram and you’ll probably find another ten people telling you which vitamins, powders, or capsules you “need” to be taking.
It can be overwhelming.
And one thing I wish more people knew is that not all supplements are created equal.
Two bottles might both contain the same vitamin or mineral, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting the same quality, dosage, ingredients, or level of testing.
So, how do you choose high quality supplements and know what you’re actually paying for?
Start With Why You’re Taking the Supplement
Before we even talk about brands, this is where I like to start:
Why are you taking the supplement in the first place?
I see people taking handfuls of supplements because they’ve heard they’re good for energy, hormones, gut health, immunity, or inflammation.
But more isn’t always better.
Your body is individual, and your supplement routine should be too.
Before recommending functional medicine supplements to a client, I want to understand their symptoms, health history, nutrition, lifestyle, medications, and, where appropriate, their lab results.
Because the goal isn’t to take as many supplements as possible.
It’s to give your body the support it actually needs.
Look for Third Party Tested Supplements
One of the most important things to consider when choosing high quality supplements is testing.
When I’m looking at supplement quality, I want confidence that what’s written on the label reflects what’s actually inside the product.
Third party testing means a supplement has been evaluated independently rather than relying only on the manufacturer’s own quality checks.
This is one of the reasons I use Fullscript when recommending professional grade supplements to my clients.
The quality of what you’re putting into your body matters.
Simply grabbing the first bottle you see at Walmart because it says “immune support,” “gut health,” or “energy” on the front doesn’t necessarily tell you enough about the quality of that supplement.
If you already know what you’re looking for, you can also shop professional grade supplements through my Fullscript dispensary here.
Check What’s Actually in the Supplement
If you’re wondering how to know if a supplement is good quality, turn the bottle around.
Look beyond the marketing on the front and check:
What ingredients are included?
What form of the nutrient does it contain?
How much are you actually getting?
Are there fillers or additional ingredients you weren’t expecting?
This is where two supplements that look almost identical can actually be very different.
High quality supplements aren’t simply about the name on the bottle. The form, dosage, sourcing, testing, and overall formulation all matter.
And it’s another reason supplement recommendations shouldn’t always be one size fits all.
Don’t Assume More Supplements Mean Better Health
There’s a tendency in wellness to think that if something is good for you, taking more of it must be even better.
That’s not how supplements work.
Your body has individual needs, and some nutrients may be unnecessary or inappropriate depending on your health, medications, diet, and existing nutrient levels.
This is why I encourage people to view supplements as exactly that:
Supplemental support.
They’re there to complement your overall health plan, not replace nourishing food, quality sleep, movement, stress management, or looking deeper into the root cause of your symptoms.
Be Careful With Big Health Claims
If a supplement promises to completely balance your hormones, detox your body, fix your gut, or give you unlimited energy, I would pause.
Your health is rarely that simple.
A high quality supplement can absolutely be a supportive part of your wellness plan, but sustainable health usually comes from understanding the bigger picture.
If you’re exhausted every afternoon, for example, simply adding an “energy supplement” doesn’t explain why your energy is low.
I’d rather ask:
How are you sleeping?
What are you eating?
What’s happening with your stress levels?
Could there be a nutritional gap?
Is something else going on that deserves a closer look?
That’s the difference between chasing a symptom and getting curious about the root cause.
How to Choose the Right Supplements for Your Body
Choosing high quality supplements doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.
Start by remembering that the most popular product isn’t necessarily the best product for you.
Look for quality.
Look for transparency.
Consider third party testing.
Pay attention to ingredients and dosage.
And most importantly, understand why you’re taking the supplement in the first place.
I would much rather see someone taking a few carefully selected, high quality supplements that genuinely support their needs than spending hundreds of dollars each month on products they saw recommended online.
Because supplements are only one piece of your health story.
But if you have a cabinet full of supplements and you’re still wondering why you’re tired, bloated, struggling with your energy, or simply not feeling like yourself, adding another bottle may not be the answer.
That’s when it’s worth looking deeper.
